Why do we add "the" in front of "Internet"?

Hi! Emotion: big smileI want to ask an interesting question. We usually saythe Internet, but have you ever thought of a question: Why do we add "the" in front of the word "Internet" ?

Is there anybody who can tell me why? Thanks a lot!Emotion: smile[C]

-- certain proper nouns take the definite article. In this case, I think it's easy enough to figure out why the article has been added-- there are many smaller internets, but this is the Internet!

The same reason that we have the Eiffel Tower, the Koran, the Rocky Mountains, the Sea of Japan,etc.-- certain proper nouns take the definite article. In this case, I think it's easy enough to figure out why the article has been added-- there are many smaller internets, but this is the Internet!

Yeah, but how do you decide when to put it and when not to. For example "Today I saw Concord". Why not "the Concord" or "a Concord"?
