Why do u say "50 miles AN hour" instead of "50 miles A hour"

If the rule is that you are supposed to put "a" before a vowel then why do you put 50 miles a hour instead of 50 miles an hour??

If anyone could help me with this I would greatly appreciate that.

Thank you

Hi Rebecca The "rule" is based on pronunciation, not on spelling. We use "an" before a vowel sound . Since the H in the word "hour" is not pronounced, we say "an hour".

The "rule" is based on pronunciation, not on spelling. We use "an" before a vowel sound.
Since the H in the word "hour" is not pronounced, we say "an hour".

Here are some examples:

- an experience
- a unique experience (The first letter in the word unique sounds like the word "you".)
- an umbre
