A recent study by Nielsen showed that up to 76 percent of Vietnamese consumers prefer foreign products. This is worrisome for local brands. There are 3 reasons that people prefer foreign goods.
One of the most common reasons Vietnamese people prefer foreign goods is cost. They cost less than comparable Vietnamese-made goods. For example, a pen that was made in China is 5000VND, but a pen that was made in Vietnam is 10000VND. So that consumers buy a pen from China and they can save 5000VND. This happens in many countries, including the United States.
The second reason is that they believe those goods have a higher quality. For example, Swiss watches have a reputation for quality and prestige, For some people, the same is true of Japanese electronics. They buy Sony television instead of Asanzo, a local brand; even though Sony television is much more expensive than Asanzo.
In some sectors, consumers have few domestic choices or no choice. Vietnam doesn't have the technology and industry to make that product. It isn't necessary because sellers only need to import foreign goods to solve the need of consumers instead of spending too much money to build factories and brands. For example, when I go to buy an air fryer, I don't see any products from local brands. It's a new product that appeared 5 years ago so that Vietnam doesn't have the technology to make it.
Whatever the reasons consumers always consider before deciding to buy a new thing. Buying foreign goods is a safe choice. Local brands need to improve quality, new products, and have good prices to impress consumers.
