Thanks, MM -- but that's what the point was. A wants to know why B didn't choose the career in geology or interior design or anything else. Why English? How can I edit this sentence if it still sounds odd to your ears?

MM is right: "Why did you choose to teach English?" implies "instead of geology or interior design." If you want to keep your current sentence, change "field" to "subject." The English language isn't really a "field."
