Re your question, as the woman complains that she felt tired, the man answers her that's because she ate too much also too late "last night". That makes the reason the woman might ate a heavy dinner (last night)(B). But even she ate dinner at PM10:00, she might go to bed as usually(D), we are not sure if she had a shorten sleep time(C).

B is the only possible answer to me.

A) is out as we know she ate dinner.

C/D) Nothing there says she didn't get enough sleep. She ate 'too late' (for eating) but that says nothing about how much sleep she had last night. She may even have gone to bed early for all we know. Perhaps she normally eats at 6pm and goes to bed at 11pm. Perhaps last night she ate at 10.30pm and went to bed at 11pm. We can only work with the information we are given and not make any assumptions. We can't tell anything about the amount of sleep she had or the time she went to bed from 'I feel tired this morning' and 'I think you ate too much' or 'I think you ate too late'.

I would honestly say that, based on my understanding of the man's statement, none of the answer options are entirely correct. The man is stating that the woman ate too much (that comes under (B) had a heavy dinner) but also that she ate too late. He is not specifying that having a heavy meal alone is the reason for her tiredness or that solely eating late is the reason, but is saying generally that both of these factors (i.e. a combination of the two) is the reason for her tiredness.

(B) is the closest option but - to me, at least - not entirely correct.

I can however see hwo your students might also interpret the passage to mean C or D might be appropriate. The construction of the sentence could be a little confusing for a non-native speaker - because the verb "ate" is not repeated along with the phrase "too late last night", I can see how your students might get fixed on the concept of "too late last night" and forget about the "ate" part!

I would agree with Ali.

I also find something a little strange in the man's comment. There's an ellipsis of a 2nd "ate"; but the first "ate" is transitive, while the second must be intransitive.
