Why did my application get rejected?

I just got rejected. I was told my motivation was lacking. Here is my letter. Any comments?

As a graduate in Biomedical Science, I would like to be considered for the XYZ program. The academic and commercial training offered by this program provides a strong foundation for my future career as a researcher. A Ph.D. in the Department of Medical Oncology will allow me to leverage my strong analytical and scientific abilities to make a substantial impact in the field of immunotherapy.

During my studies, biomedical science captivated my interest; not only because of the interesting material, but also because of the way each fact fit into the puzzle that is biology. My immunology course-work was especially engaging. I learned about the complex mechanisms of the immune system and how the body’s natural defenses could be exploited for developing novel therapeutic treatments. Furthermore, I became familiar with the complex interactions between the different systems of the body. My work in derma-immunology allowed me to explore these ideas further and I quickly became fascinated by the idea of applying established treatments to a new clinical setting. Tackling the idea of using ACE- inhibitors and statins for the treatment of fibrosis stimulated my desire to further explore signaling pathways and mechanisms in biology.

Previous studies in the field of melanoma have investigated tumor specific antigens, spontaneous remission, and combined therapies. As a Ph.D. student I look forward to building upon this knowledge for the optimization of tumor eradication via oncolytic adenoviruses. My previous experience will enable me to further explore RNAi of immunosuppressive signals in tumors, lytic replication, and T-cell activation to improve patient outcomes.

I am convinced that this program is the logical continuation of my career. My technical skills in cell-culture, immunology, and oncology, combined with my professionalism and openness, will enable me to develop innovative projects in the field of research.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Thanks Clive! I am going to do this now. I got the rejection about 1 hr ago. I am hoping they will reconsider. I will write a new letter. So basically, make the letter about why I want to do the program and not my background?

Honestly, I really thought I was being direct about my motivation. I talked about what makes me want to do science and why. Why I picked immunology and experiences I found stimulated. Then I talked about how I would use this knowledge in this program. I am not disagreeing with you. I just thought I had done my best. I asked them to re-evaluate my candidature, still no answer. I will write the lett
