Why did he say "I'm glad to hear it" ?

Hello everyone!

I know it's a little thing and perhaps completely irrelevant from a native speaker's point of view, but I'd really like to know why some people say I'm glad to hear it and others seem to prefer I'm glad to hear that.

I'd really like to know why some people like pie for dessert and others seem to prefer cake.
