Why are they taken out the food?

Hi.

Now I'm trying read as below sentence.
"Their 
often middle-class parents are spending money to give them foods with ingredients taken 
out. It's as if some of us have become unnecessarily frightened of our food."

But I can't understand why do middle class parents take out the food?

Also what is the meaning " It's as if some of us have become unnecessarily frightened of our food."?
