Why are thesis and theses used interchangeably?

A quick survey of university websites, journals and other references will demonstrate that both are used in similar contexts. Why is this the case? Historically, it is shown that "theses" was the first use of the word. However, it appears that somewhere along the way the word "thesis" became more main stream. Is "thesis" now an official accepted spelling?
