Why are publicists 'pluggers'?

Hi all

I was just wondering if there is a reason why publicists are refered to as 'pluggers'. Any clues?

Thanks

Plugging something is the same as touting it. The expression "to keep plugging away at something" means to be persistent - to persevere - to "hammer away" at something. " In the old Tin Pan Alley days of popular song writing (the 30's) there were "song pluggers" whose job was to keep playing a group of new songs on the piano, and probably singing them.

  • These days, authors of new books hold booksignings in book stores to "plug" their new books.
  • I know that doesn't answer your question.

Edit. Visitors on talk shows usually say, "Is it okay if I get in a plug for my new book?"

Most talk show hosts these days always get in a plug for their blogs.
