Why are novels hard to read and understand?

In many cases I find novels difficult to read and understand. There are lots of difficult new vocabularies and even phrasal verbs and idioms.
Do you recommend reading this type of texts?
How should I manage to learn new vocabularies extracted from these books? (Just learning that single usage or learning all the usages)

Top answer

Personally, I hate reading novels. I prefer watching subtitled videos on Youtube. Difficult texts can be useful to improve your English level.
