Why am i or why do i?

I'm having a discussion at the moment. I keep insisting that the correct form of this particular sentence is: Why do I keep doing this?

My mother keeps insisting that "Why am I keep doing this?" is also correct. I'm pretty sure that this isn't the case. Can you confirm my statement?
