Who/whom

In the following sentence, should I use who or whom?

"I took the child who/whom was lost to her mother."

At first glance it seems "who" would be correct since you would use the nominative case in the adjective clause (she was lost). I was told "whom" is the correct answer because the lost child is the direct object.
