Whom or Them

Scientists not only have labs with students who contribute critical ideas, but also have collegues who are doing similar work, thinking similar thoughts, and without [whom/them] the scientist would get nowhere.


Which one is correct, and why?

(I think "them" is correct, because of the preceding "and", but the text reads otherwise.)
