Whole story and Overall context

Hi,

I’m looking for proper words to fill in the blank of the following sentence.

After reading the first few sentences of the passage, I can understand the……

1. whole story.

2. overall context.

I prefer “whole story”. Are they interchangeable? If there is more suitable alternative, please let me know.

Thank you in advance.
