Whoever/whomever

Mary hopes to become a friend of whoever/whomever shares her interests.

Dear teachers, I wonder if the both are correct. Thank you very much.

You will hear both, but only ' whoever ' is strictly 'correct' grammar, since the pronoun's function as subject of the verb 'shares' has priority over the preposition. The object of the preposition of is the whole clause, 'whoever shares her interests'.
