Who / which

1. Which of the players is the fastest?
2. Who is the fastest of the players?

Q: Why is “who” used in sentence #2? Can we use “which” in both sentences?

Which of the players is the fastest? -- Fine Who of the players is the fastest? -- Not natural to me (but I do not consider it technically incorrect).

Which of the players is the fastest? -- Fine

Who of the players is the fastest? -- Not natural to me (but I do not consider it technically incorrect).

Which is the fastest of the players? -- To me this is OK but tends to depersonalise/distance. "Who" is the normal choice, and is always suitable, so it's probably best to stick with that.
