Who vs whom (again).

the sentence:

The discoverer of the New World, whom everybody called a foolhardy navigator, was relatively unknown both in the Old World and in the New World.

the problem:

Can someone please explain why the word "whom" is required here as opposed to "who"? I thought I had the object vs subject issue sorted out but according to this sentence I am wrong Emotion: sad.

Thanks!

H.
