Who vs. Whom

Hi all, I need some help with this sentence:

"Martina Navratilova whom most tennis fans refer to only as Martina dominated women's tennis for years."

Whom is confusing me here. Isn't "who" the proper word here since Martina is the subject of the sentence? Or is it whom? Please explain to me why! Thanks!
