who or whom?

Can anyone tell me which of the following sentences is correct, and perhaps, why? I've looked it up but still can't seem to work it out:
"Men assign status to footballers who they know to be athletic"
vs "Men assign status to footballers whom they know to be athletic"
Thanks!
