i´m neither a narrative, but would like to suggest shakespeare. if it´s supposed to be a bit newer, i could think of arthur conan doyle (sherlock holmes) or agatha christy. i hope that my suggestions are not insulting any english narratives who think entirely different

Thank you for replay.
Yes,Shekespeare is the classics. But if speaking about Christie and Konan Doyle is it
"easy reading" in some way?
What do you think about Dickens, Shou? Do they popular or not?

Timbo, you mean 'native' not 'narrative'.

I'd say Shakespeare must be the most well-known.

Add me to the list of people who thought of Shakespeare first.

I would put Dickens and Jane Austen just after them. There are so many "classic" writers, but so many of them were just no fun for me to read. I love the three I listed though.

William Shakespeare. His work has been printed more than any other books, except The Holy Bible.

I heard some opinion that Shakespeare is not very popular in England because his language is hard to modern people understanding. Is it true?

It is hard to understand - you have to work at it. But that doesn't make him unpopular.

This thread reminds me of my ex-roommate who asked me, aftering failing to translate the name "Shakespeare" into Japanese in class, "Who is Shakespeare? Do you mean Shave Beard?"

That I don't know. It is definitely popular for teachers in high school or college for students to read.
