Who is right?

Passage segment (about Work and Play):

The one [work] we do for a living, what we do to acquire the necessities of life, what most of us reluctantly have to do a lot of the time; the other [play] we do for no reward (other than itself), I'd not necessary for our survival, and is something we choose to do when we are not at work."

Qn: Explain what the author is referring to in the words 'no reward (other than itself)'.

X: The author is referring to play being a reward in and of itself, and the only reward of play.

Y: Wrong. There is a parallel between work and play, and the answer is split into two parts: 'no reward' and 'other than itself'. By comparing the parallels, work is what we do for a living, i.e. money. Hence, the answer for 'no reward' is no monetary benefit, and the answer for 'other than itself' is enjoyment. Hence, the author is referring to play having no monetary benefits other than the enjoyment and pleasure of play.

X: But 'other than itself' refers to a subset of a whole! You can say 'there are no cars on the road other than a taxi', but you cannot say 'there are no cars on the road other than a helicopter'.

Y: That is no parallel.

Who is right? X or Y?

Unfortunately, only one of them is right, and I (I'm X) am marked as wrong for it.
