Who is missing?

My previous english teacher was using the expression a lot to find out who is not present in her lesson.

I'd like to ask whether it is incorrect to use "Who is missing?" instead of "Who is absent?" (Which I certainly consider correct).

I have been told by another English teacher that "Who is missing?" is regarded as a wrong phrase for asking hpw many pupils aren't present in a lesson.

Thank you in advance.
