1) If “it” can only stand in for an object or an animal (according to grammar and the Nestor's answer to me), then why we say when somebody knocks the door: Who is it? (Maybe do we suppose that an animal is knocking the door? 2) Why we say: "Oh, it's you!" 3) OK, “of unknown sex”. Does it mean I can say, for example: "He (I know my cat is a male animal) loves my sister Patty"?
