Jenny would have been friends with Kate, had it not been for her arrogance.

I think this sentence is an example of two tenses. The conditional progressive: 'she would have been friends with Kate' and the past perfect progressive: 'Had it not been for Jenny's arrogance'

There can be no progressive without an -ing form. would have been is modal perfect and had... been is past perfect.

Were I to rewrite the sentence as:

Had it not been for Jenny's moaning, Kate would have befriended her.

'Had it not been for Jenny's moaning' - I think this is now an example of the conditional progressive tense.

'Kate would have befriended her' - Is this an example of the conditional simple tense.

No. The -ing form there is a gerund. Here is a past perfect conditional:

If Jenny had not been moaning / Had Jenny not been moaning

Grammarians today do not refer to forms with would as conditional tenses. They
