Well, not much context there. It is a description of a city's streets... "In the streets (of an unknown town] we'd see crowds of cider-boys gathered laughing and muttering on the green grass outside the Gateways supermarket". No further reference. I can always omit it, It is not crucial for the meaning of the text, but I just wanted to know.

Me, too, now. I tried several searches, and all I can come up with is "a man who prefers cider to beer". It could also be a kind of street urchin, but "supermarket" places us in modern times, so it would have to be tongue-in-cheek. There are Gateway supermarkets in Oakland, California, and Bristol, UK.

I wonder if it is a pejorative reference to young hooligans who get drunk on a lot of cider and then make trouble..
It reminds me a little of the British term 'lager louts'.
