Whisper aloud

Hi,

Can you help me to understand the meaning of "whisper aloud"? I am confused. It seems to me what whisper connotes contradicts what aloud conveys.

He bowed his head in defeat. “It’s hopeless,” he whispered aloud. “I just can’t do this! Unless someone helps me, there’s no escape!"
