Hi friends Emotion: smile

I have a word here that i've nearly gone mad to find the meaning.. I came across this word when reading an old american short story.. Please help me with the meaning.. here it is:

Ahead or astern, on one side or the other, at intervals long or short, fled the long sparkling streak, and there was to be heard the whiroo of the dark ?n.

Hmm.. i also guess so.. What made me curious was the bereft of explanation in any dictionary for this word. Anyway.. Thank you

whiroo is a sound of something.. like echo.. hmm i dont know how i can explain but it means in that text; something is fleeting streak and you can here it's sound "whiroo" of the dark fin. Think like something is falling down and a sound is coming to your ears like "fiiiuuuwwww..."
