How can someone teach the while and when usage? While and when have new functions as preposition and connector as part of a sentence (Huddleston & Pullum, 2009). What has changed in syntax then? In earlier grammar books, Azar and Hagen explained when and while function as adverbs or conjunctions "adverbial clauses."
