While vs Whilst

Which should be used and when? I've heard that whilst is archaic but would you still use it if you were writing something formal such as a textbook?

No, while is perfectly good in formal contexts. Whilst is dying out. It gets used regionally and by a minority of people, but you don't need it.

Thanks, I thought so but I'm too much of a traditionalist and still prefer whilst!
