Grammar

while V-ing and when V-ing

My mom called me while I was playing in the playground = My mom called me when I was playing in the playground.

I think while and when are interchangeable in the sentence above, right?

Is there any difference between while V-ing and when V-ing?

Please give me some examples

Thanks for replying

There is a long thread (four pages) on "when and while". Start here: when/while/as In short, "while" is more usual in the case you show in your post, but "when" is also possible. CJ [2]

When and while are not equivalent.
When marks a short action interrupting a longer one (ex: I was walking when I heard a scream)
While marks a longer action happening / 2 simultaneous actions (ex: I was writing my homework while I was waiting)
