"While placed on hold"???

Please look at the following sentence.

"Customers who hear music on an open telephone line while placed on hold are less likely to hang up"

Could you tell me what words were omitted between "while" and "placed"?
I mean the subject of "place on hold".
Is it "customers' being " or "telephone lines' being"?

Thank you for your answer in advance
