While or when

Which is acceptable, (1) or (2) ?

(1) While Jilly was trying to make the robot dog say something again, she was shocked to hear the robot dog shout "You are stupid!".

(2) When Jilly was trying to make the robot dog say something again, she was shocked to hear the robot dog shout "You are stupid!".

I'd use only #1. The past continuous tense usually doesn't work well "when" even though there are some exceptions.
