"While I re-read the story..."

I wrote:

---------------
As a child, I had read the story in translation. While I re-read the story in the original,
many events provoked me to ponder for a while.
---------------

I myself find "re-read" somewhat awkward, but I fail to think of another phrase or word to replace it.
Does anything have a suggestion?

Best Wishes.
