While doing some shopping on the way

On the final day of our journey, we noticed that we had forgotten to buy souvenirs for our family and friends. So, we went to the airport while doing some souvenir shopping on the way.

Is the above passage correct? Besides, is there any better way to express this?

It's understandable, but very awkward. It would be better to phrase it as So we did some souvenir shopping ( while ) on the way to the airport.
