Hi Hero, I think that 'while' usually carries the simpler meaning of 'at the same time', whereas 'whereas' more often carries the additional meaning of 'at the same time on the other hand'. Their various dictionary meanings include both these, so they overlap considerably. 'Whereas' tends to appear much more frequently in official and legal documents.
