which word to use: previous/former/past

Hi,
Would anyone please tell me which word to use in the following sentence, and what's the difference among them:

The president of NFX Media Corporation is a ___ professional soccer player.
(A)once (B)previous (C)former (D)past

That's not one of the choices.

To my understanding, they are used in the following way:

1. ... is once a professional soccer player.
2. ... is previously a professional soccer player.
3. ... is a former/past professional soccer player.

But I am not sure about the difference between former and past.

You can it should be 'former' because that is the only option that applies after 'is'. We are commenting on his current state - he IS a former player.
