Which word, story or floor?

Is it completely wrong to say the following sentence? Is it really necessary to use story instead of floor?

He lives in a 5-floor building

As illogical as it may seem, "story" works better. It may just "be the way we say it". "He lives on the fifth floor" sounds better than 'on the fifth story'.
