Which word is suitable, when a device is not working

Would you please let me know how can I use the word "defect" when I want to say a device is not working. Or there is a better word for that.

Thank you.

Defect means that something is not working perfectly ( but it's working anyway )
While if a device is not working at all, it's another issue
You could simply say
The device is inoperative ( not working - not functioning )
The hard desk seems to be dead ( not working )
