Which word is appropriate?

Hello FOlks,

We know the famous phrase 'The importance of being earnest'.

My question is: Which word would be right when relating it to a person such as: He understood the importance of being earnest. Will 'understood' be right here? Or some other word which is more suitable?

Thank you.
