Which word is a better choice, earlier or before?

Aerys, who had become increasingly paranoid and cruel since his several months of confined imprisonment during the Defiance of Duskendale several years earlier/before, ordered the fathers of the prisoners to come south to answer for the charges against their sons.

Top answer

I think either will work. Some might feel that earlier puts a greater distance between the Defiance and the present time. I would say answer to the charges toward the end of the sentence.
