Which word choice is better?

FYI- I want it to refer to Palin and Tasslehoff. Palin used the pieces of the artifact to stop his and Tasslehoff’s pursuers, and after jumping off the celestial ladder known as the Silver Stair, (the two/they) were magically transported to Dalamar at the Tower of High Sorcery in Nightlund.
