Which Vs what

I would like to know what is the difference between "which" and "what" when use to identify something.

which of these sentences are correct:

1.What papers do I need to take?

2. Which papers do I need to take?

it is my understanding that "which" is used when you have more than one...right? so in the above sentences, # 1 is not correct, huh?

"what" identifies.
"which" selects.

With "what" it's an open choice.
With "which" there are specific items from which to choose.

That said, some people use 'what' for 'which' and 'which' for 'what'. That is, the distinction between 'what' and 'which' is not strictly observed.

In your example 'which'
