WHICH vs WHAT

Whats the difference between :

Which is your favorite instrument?

and

What is your favorite instrument?

Is it tht for Which , the sentence is followed by some choices and what is a lot vaster?

I'd say which is more specific. i.e. you're choosing from a selection.

Which (out of these three bikes) do you prefer? - More specific
If you could have any car in the world, what would it be? - Less specific

Though, I don't believe any rules are in place to dispute this but one works best in certain situations. Hope this helps.

'Which' is used when a choice between objects is given, and 'what' is used in all other cases.
