Which version of the sentence is correct

Hello,
Which version of the sentence is correct out of following:
1)the views of France’s Socialist president are more compatible with President Reagan’s than were those of his predecessor.
2)the views of France’s Socialist president are more compatible with President Reagan’s than those of his predecessor were.

And also can you explain the grammatical structure of the same?
