Which verb to express this idea?

Hi,

Is there a verb in English which expresses the action of... pretending to scold at someone?

For example, little Peter went out to play, and he came back with his clothes very dirty. His father laughed and hugged him and said: 'you rascal boy!'

So, Peter's father ... him?

Many thanks,

Nessie. Emotion: smile

I've seen "scolded" with "mock" tacked on at the front for this meaning (a mock-scolding tone, he mock-scolded). But I can't think of a word with this precise meaning otherwise. Too bad - it would be a good word
