Which verb tense is correct?

Hi, I'm writing my English paper. I need to know which of the following sentences is correct.

1. Since Scout and Jem's mother passes away, Calpurnia teaches Scout and Jem the ethics that one's mother usually teaches.

OR

2. Since Scout and Jem's mother passed away, Calpurnia teaches Scout and Jem the ethics that one's mother usually teaches.

Basically, I'm wondering, should I use passes away or passed away?

Thanks =)

She passed away in the past, so use the past simple. However, remember that when you use since or from , you need to use the present perfect in the independent clause. ( has taught or has been teaching if it is incomplete)
