Which one are you trying to say?

a- ... despite the fact that drugs have adverse effects ...

or

b- ... but these drugs have adverse effects ...

By the way, "usage" is a wrong word there. It should be "use". You will find dictionaries that disagree, but all that means is that some of us do not accept "usage" there, and that is enough to condemn it when "use" makes everybody happy.
