Which tense would fit?

Imagine this situation/dialog

A: Hey, why did you say that? You really behave like an idiot!
B: What? I really just have been trying to be nice to you!

Which tense would fit in the sentence from Person B?

I chose present perfect progressive, because he was trying to be nice, but now the consequences and the impact on the present count. "Tried to be nice" doesn't make sence, that wouldn't put the emphasis on the duration or on the action itself. "Was trying" would work but wouldn't put the emphasis on the present moment, in which we are criticised by Person A.

Are my assumptions correct?
