Which tense to use?

Not sure which tense to use in the following sentence:

"On your September invoice, the balance due was/is $200"

I understand that if we're talking about the past, we're supposed to use the past tense. However, the value of $200 is still true. I feel like if I use the verb, was, it may confuse the reader that the amount may not be $200 anymore? I hope that makes sense.

It is possible to use the present, if the amount was never paid and you are looking at several months of invoices spread out on the desk in front of you.

Look, here your September invoice is $200. Then, the Ocober invoice is the prior $200, plus a new $50 charge. Looks like nothing changed until this January invoice, which is the prior $250, plus late chages, and a new charge of $1
